Native DICOM Support for Workflow and Viewer Integration

Flywheel is committed to providing tools for a custom, efficient workflow. Users can use the API to access DICOMs in Flywheel or use the built-in Open Health Imaging Foundation (OHIF) Viewer by selecting an imaging file in the user interface.

Using the DIMSE Service (DICOM Message Service Element), DICOMs in Flywheel projects may be accessed with any standard DICOM viewers and tools, enabling collaboration with radiologists and integration with existing workflows.

Use Third Party Tools to Access Imaging Data in Flywheel

DIMSE is a standard service that enables two applications to communicate in their network about DICOM data, ensuring an efficient workflow.

Flywheel’s application support for DIMSE enables researchers to collaborate with radiologists at their institutions with their preferred DICOM viewers, such as Osirix. The DIMSE service also enables you to integrate Flywheel with existing DICOM workflows, using industry-standard analytical tools, such as PMOD or MIM.

Simplifying Clinical Research for Radiologists

Integrating data from Flywheel into existing DICOM-reading workflows enables the following use cases:

  • Safety reads for incidental findings
  • Efficacy reads within longitudinal studies
  • Blind multi-reader studies with radiologists using different third party applications
  • Including curated medical imaging data sets in your analytical processing pipelines

Using the DIMSE Standard Service

DIMSE is available in versions 11.0 and above . Consult our documentation to determine compatibility with your existing tools.

To access DICOMS via the DIMSE Standard Service, you can register your DICOM peer application in Flywheel and then query Flywheel project data through the peer application.

Query your Flywheel Project DICOMs from External Tools such as Osirix

Viewing DICOMs in a peer application

Data access from peer applications is currently limited to DICOM. You may visit our documentation to learn more.
