Our Story
It all started at Stanford. During his work as Director of the Center for Cognitive and Neurobiological Imaging at Stanford University, Brian Wandell, PhD, came to recognize that the growth and complexity of imaging data sets posed a challenge to labs looking to carry out advanced medical research.
In response to this need, Dr. Wandell partnered with his colleague, medtech innovator Gunnar Schaefer, to develop a system that captured images from MRI scanners, organized them and curated the images into a database, providing users with a web interface to view and share it. The result was so successful at the lab that collaborators leaving Stanford wanted to take the system with them. Dr. Wandell and Schaefer knew they had something that could fill a real need in the medical research space, and help accelerate imaging research and collaboration worldwide.
In 2015, Dr. Wandell and Schaefer partnered with Minnesota-based venture studio Invenshure to create a product from the idea born at Stanford. Since then, Flywheel has grown into a comprehensive solution for pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, AI developers and academic medical centers to optimize their research, advance machine learning workflows and provide crucial insights for clinical trials.
