Data Capture & Management


Magnet Integration & Automated Processing

The Flywheel platform helps teams improve productivity and maximize the value of their data. Flywheel is directly integrated with the MRI scanner, which allows a researcher conducting a scanning session to simply specify the group and project to which those data should belong. Flywheel’s automated processing capability handles data format conversion (e.g.DICOM to NIfTI) and organizes all of the scanner data and associated metadata in the researcher’s specified Flywheel project. By automating the integration and routine processing, researcher productivity increases and support costs decrease.

EEG Connector

EEG data can now be integrated directly into the Flywheel ecosystem. Our EEG Connector was developed for specifying Flywheel Group and Project information within the EEG Recorder user interface. Now, data will be captured and attributed automatically within your Flywheel instance.

External Data Sets

Data and metadata from existing data sets can be imported into Flywheel and managed along with scans unique to a project. The platform is data agnostic and can support virtually any scientific data, including data from other sources and modalities such as EEG, PET/CT, and genomics data.

Metadata & Search

Flywheel’s ability to store extensive metadata combined with its powerful search capability enable researchers to easily find the subset of data they need using a variety of demographic and operational criteria. From those results, data can be organized into new collections as necessary to support the ongoing needs of projects

Gears and Software Reuse

The Flywheel platform supports reusable software components referred to as “Gears.” Gears save researchers time by eliminating the complexity of installing, maintaining and using the diverse set of software tools needed for their project. Flywheel is working with neuroimaging software developers to develop Gears from universally accepted algorithms and software packages. The platform currently provides a rich library of Gears that perform a wide array of common tasks and analyses including DICOM to NIfTI conversion, quality assurance analysis, tissue segmentation, whole-brain fiber tract generation and segmentation, template generation, functional connectivity analysis, structural alignment and much more.

Flywheel supports an open standard that enables software developers to deploy their software as Gears. These Gears may be deployed to meet the unique needs of a specific project or group. Optionally, Gear developers may publish and share these algorithms for use by the broader research community. Gears may be developed in a variety of languages or tools including, but not limited to, Mathwork’s Matlab, Python, or R.

Web App & Command Line Interfaces

Flywheel provides two key ways to work with Gears. The platform provides an easy to use user interface that simplifies Gear configuration and execution. For power users, Flywheel provides a complete command line interface that enables access to all key platform resources from their preferred scripting environments. Flywheel offers the power and flexibility expected by advanced technical users while simplifying routine work for less technical researchers.

Data Provenance

Flywheel not only enables access to the functionality of various software suites via Gears but also provides a simple user interface that standardizes the parameters and options used to execute the software. At run-time, all execution options, parameters, and results are logged to provide a comprehensive data provenance record.

Scalable Compute Engine

Flywheel’s compute engine enables researchers to perform computational analysis in a repeatable and scalable manner. Whether you’re using a single computer or a multi-node cluster, Flywheel allows you to schedule and run your analytic applications (Gears) in parallel enabling you to get results faster.

Secure, Global Collaboration


Security

All data is stored securely within the Flywheel platform. Data owners can control exactly who can access their data and with what privileges. Further, Flywheel supports the ability to anonymize data prior to data sharing to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for protecting subject data. Flywheel Lab Edition is HIPAA compliant.

Multi-Center Collaboration

Flywheel’s sharing and collaboration capabilities work in a multi-user lab environment as well as with multi-center collaborative projects. Imaging modalities such as MR or CT scanners in different centers at the same institution can have their data pipelined into Flywheel’s centralized server. Researchers across these centers, with appropriate permissions, can access data to conduct multidisciplinary research with their colleagues.
